Remember Whensday No. 35 - We're Number 4!

This week for the Remember Whensday meme, it's Karl at the Everett Silvertips hockey game. A couple of years ago, Karl and I went to a game along with two other couples. During the breaks in between periods, there is some form of entertainment. On this particular night, Karl was part of the entertainment.

Karl was on his way to the restroom to use the facility when he was asked if he wanted to participate in a game. He thought it was going to be the one where somebody tries to hit the puck through the hole in board and win a prize. So he said sure but he REALLY needed to use the restrooom first. No problem, he was told. Off he goes to participate.

Unfortunately, while he was using the facilities, the instructions for the game were being given to the other 3 participants. He came in at the very end to learn he was going to put a puzzle together. Then he was handed a hula skirt and straw hat to wear. The Washington State Lottery was giving away lottery tickets with a chance to go to Maui, Hawaii.

The four players go out to center ice where each one will race to one of the corners and put a 9 piece puzzle together. Little did Karl know the other participants were shown the completed puzzle which was a picture of a lottery ticket. He also missed the instructions that as soon as the first person had their puzzle together and was racing back to center ice, everyone else was supposed to race back, too. All four players run to their corners and begin to assemble their puzzle. Karl's working on his and doesn't see the other 3 players running back to center ice. He's still working on the puzzle. From the crowd he hears, "Run, dumba$$, run!" He looks up and figures he'd better get back to center ice, too.

When he got back to the stands after the game, our little section was chanting "We're number 4! We're number 4!" It was hilarious and Karl was a really good sport about it all.

He ended up winning two very nice sets of luggage and some lottery tickets that added another $30 in winnings. Not bad.

Remember Whensday No. 28 - 1st Washington Christmas

This week for Remember Whensday, in keeping with a Christmas theme, I am remembering my first Christmas in Washington with my future husband and stepsons. We kept things simple that year with a small artificial tree.

I guess Karl thinks he's a Christmas present.

Karl

Ryan got a Walkman; obsolete technology these days. He also got some clothes and probably a silly gift. Karl got at least one shirt. I can't remember the rest.

Check out the silliness on these two!

Ryan & Karl

Josh got new shoes, pants and a drawing set. And a silly gift, of course!

Josh

Me, I got two little hand towels from my BFF back in Maryland. We always exchanged gifts with cardinal motifs since they are our favorite bird. You won't find cardinals in Washington state. Drats!

OMG, look at those high-waisted jeans I'm wearing! Oh, to be that thin again though.

Sally

It was the start of many great Christmases.

Remember Whensday No. 25 - 4 Cousins

This week I'm sharing a photo from my husband's collection taken at Thanksgiving in 1969.

Karl thinks this photo was taken at his Aunt Marlene & Uncle John's house. Unfortunately he doesn't remember anything about it or that day.

One of my favorite Thanksgiving memories is using Grandma's sandwich glass dishes for dinner. They only were used for special occasions. Several pieces have been broken over the years and occasionally I look for replacements. But they are hard to find and expensive when you do find them.

Thanks for sharing in my remembrance this week. To see what others are sharing through "old" photos in my Remember Whensday meme, click on the badge below. Better yet, share yours!

Remember Whensday No. 4 - Karl & the Trout

This week, I've got another picture of Karl, this time from June 1983.

He was camping at Diamond Lake in Oregon with his family including his brother-in-law, Tim, and father-in-law.

Apparently it was just your average camping trip. Nothing special to recall except they also fished the Umpqua River and Tim, who was about 10 years old at the time, caught a nice river trout.

Remember Whensday No. 2 - Karl & the Snapper

Karl served 4 years in the Coast Guard and was stationed on the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Citrus based in Coos Bay, OR.

In this photo, his ship was at anchor somewhere along the Oregon coast. When Karl wasn't on duty, he was allowed to fish from the ship. This is a snapper that he caught and was later served on the Mess Deck.

The Mighty Fisherman

Karl went fishing with a fellow kayak angler for "dinos" last Friday. That's a code word that I'm not allowed to say what it means. Just in case someone Googles the fish name, I guess they don't want other fishermen in on their secret find.

Karl had "fish on!" twice. The first one was not a keeper since it was over the slot limit (38"-54"). He estimated it was around 80" long. Luckily the fish got off the hook on its own.

The second dino, shown below, was a legal fish coming in at 44" long. Don't ask me how much it weighed because I haven't a clue.

It's a Keeper!

Karl said it was quite a challenge landing this dino while sitting in his kayak. It's a big and heavy fish, plus you are sitting low to the water and in an awkward position to try and hoist it in. After a couple of attempts, he got it in the yak.

A Good Reason to Smile

The dino was a good addition to his Angler of the Year points total. And this was the biggest fish he's caught so far in the 'yak. Go Karl!

I'm just glad I didn't have to clean it.

Remember Whensday - The Fisherman

Karl has been doing a lot of fishing lately. Not catching, just fishing. Unlike the photo below. :-)
